Spirit of the Gulf is an award-winning women's a cappella chorus, dedicated to musical excellence, education and the promotion of harmony singing throughout Florida.

We are part of sai-sub border Sweet Adelines International , a worldwide organization of women singers, established in 1945, committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performances. This independent, nonprofit music education association is one of the world's largest singing organizations for women, has a current membership of over 25,000 and holds a yearly international singing competition.

Directed by Mike Slamka, Spirit of the Gulf Chorus continues to excel in a capella barbershop harmony.

Spirit of the Gulf Chorus holds many honors. Beginning in 2002, these honors include: 11 Florida State SAI Chorus Champion medals, six top-ten medals at Sweet Adelines International competition, most recently earning a 10th place SAI International medal in Baltimore 2014.  We are proud to have been chosen by the audience as the  “Most Entertaining Chorus” again in 2012 for the third time.

With a Capella singing reigniting its popularity around the world, one of its hottest flames is the category of women’s barbershop.  Celebrated with glamour, sparkle, and, joyful singing at the recent Sweet Adelines International Convention and Competition in Baltimore during the week of Nov. 5th, Spirit of the Gulf came away with an exciting finish in the top ten of the world’s best women’s barbershop choruses.

We won 10th best Sweet Adeline chorus in the world!! But our biggest win is having a director whose only goal is "to change the lives of those for whom and with whom we sing". Thanks Michael Slamka!! We're changing each other's lives.

BLINGThe Sweet Adelines 2015 International First Place Gold Medal quartet winner Bling!, with Tenor Dayve Gabbard,  Lead Angie Love-Callahan, Baritone Deanna Kastler, and Bass Kim Elger-Griffin wowed the crowd of nearly ten thousand with their tightly ringing chords, impeccable sound, and magnificent blend.  After the royal and regal coronation of the members of our beloved Bling! as SAI’s newest Queens of Harmony in Baltimore on November 7, 2014, a special celebration continued here in Ft. Myers, Tuesday, Nov. 11th.   We were so proud to have barbershop royalty singing with us in the Chorus Finals, as we reached that distinguished honor once again.  Baritone singer Deanna Kastler is also the Assistant Director of Spirit of the Gulf.

This chorus is honored to have such exceptional talent associated with us, as we are guided by our Director, Michael Slamka, himself a multi-time top award and Gold Medal winner in men’s barbershop.  Slamka’s daughter, and Spirit of the Gulf member, Michaela, was part of the winning quartet, ClassRing, who took the highest award at the SAI sponsored Rising Star competition recently in Lowell, Mass.

This stellar year isn’t over yet, as Bling! will be sharing the stage with Spirit of the Gulf at our Christmas show on Sunday, December 7th, 3:00 pm, at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Center, 8099 College Parkway SW, Ft. Myers.  For tickets call (230) 405-0713.  See you there!
